My raised beds have 2 x 8's around them. No weeds like Terry. For watering I use a drip system under red mulch. Tomato yield better than other mulches. |

I like to grow strawberries on the red mulch. I found the birds have a hard time finding those first red berries of the season and it keeps my berries clean which is nice since most are eaten before they make it to the house.
Downside is the weeds do grow under the mulch so I lay newspaper down first and then cover with the mulch. I purchased my Red Mulch from Territorial Seed Co. |

I experimented with the "High Yield Red Tomato Mulch" from Park Seed - three pairs of raised beds with 5 tomatoes each were planted. In each pair, one bed was mulched with the RPM, the other with traditional newspaper and straw.
Yields were virtually the same in both, but:
1) The RPM beds were harder to weed (the crab grass tended to grow quite nicely under the mulch);
2) The RPM made it difficult to water the plants. |
