I live in an arid prairie in southeastern Colorado. When my thirsty turf had issues, I decided to xeriscape. I am in the process of building gardens in and around this space. Last year I planted two jumbo waterwise gardens, and a border of flowers from High Country Gardens since I enjoy the "cottage look" of lots of flowers. My neigbors and even strangers have stopped and admired my front yard even though it is still a work in progress. This spring I have planted three more gardens. I don't know who is more excited to see the end result: my neighbors or me! Last year, I had maybe seven plants croak, but High Country Gardens reimbursed this loss. High Country Garden has such a wide selection of plants that I cannot find in my area, and the plants I have selected are rabbit resistant. Now, I can say I have definitely caught the gardening bug. Once my front yard is complete, I now envision other garden nooks. One more note, my gardens are so easy to maintain, and they are so much easier than my old lawn. So now my backyard lawn may also be listed on the endangered list!

In 2005 I planted at least 10 plants I purchased from High Country Gardens. They showed up when the said and they were all in good condition. Not all of the survived because my dog didn't like them (peed on them)or because I planted them in places they couldn't get enough sun but the ones that did survive are are fabulous.

I just made another purchase from High Country Gardens of 15 plants and look forward to their beauty. I'm glad HCG is there to get Xeric plants. I will continue to buy from them.

A very successful business model for xeriscape landscaping and plants, this nursery somehow tries to do too much. They are experts at marketing so they are always packed. I've noticed that they grow fewer of their own plants, always a bad sign in Santa Fe's relatively harsh climate. My experience is that their plants are pricey and often not acclimated enough to survive here, hence my disappointment with their standards of quality for customers who want plants to survive more than a few weeks.

I have mixed feelings about this nursery. Great selection of native or low water plants. Great selection of trees and shrubbery. Selection of vegetable plants not as huge as a nursery this large would suggest. Items for sale are artistic, varied, and interesting. Since live material is considerably more expensive than that of other nurseries in Santa Fe, I expect at least as good quality in plants. I have not always had it. The community lecture series is outstanding. In spite of a few disappointments in staff and plants, I keep going back.

The 2007 Spring Seminar Series is an excellent source of information on gardening in the Southwest! Very knowledgable
speakers, wide range of subjects, great handout material, and
friendly staff. Oh! and they serve cookies and coffee! The series is running through March 3rd...every Saturday at 2PM.
