Positive | juanwillis | On Dec 21, 2007, juanwillis wrote: Yes, the subject is gardening, but these are wonderful, funny, insightful essays whether you care a whit about gardening or not. I think the best comparison is E.B. White--if you love one you'll love the other. This is definitely a book to cherish during cold winter evenings while dreaming of the spring to come. |
Positive | bmuller | On Mar 27, 2007, bmuller wrote: Henry Mitchell is one of my absolute favorite garden writers. He not only provides excellent information but writes about gardens, gardening--and gardeners--in an unforgettable and utterly delightful way. This is a wonderful book. |
Positive | egm | On Mar 25, 2007, egm wrote: This book arrived this past winter from a lovely cottage neighbour who lives south of the border (Can/US). It is a collection of articles from a columnist in Washington from the 70's/80's. Although it is full of useful information about gardening from zone 7, it is mostly applicable to zone 4/5 as well. It is easy to get caught up in the challenges of gardening and get discouraged, but this witty columnist put a smile on my face, reminding me to relax; that gardening is not a perfect science and everyone fumbles. A wonderful winter read. |
Positive | Burnet | On Jan 21, 2006, Burnet wrote: Henry Mitchell's books are among the very best garden writing out there. Read them all, and then read them again; they give more at each reading. |
Positive | Miggy | On Jan 22, 2005, Miggy wrote: Henry Mitchell is not a writer of garden books, but a gardener who writes. I think you'll recognise his writing as coming from one of our own. Passionate, opinionated, and constantly knocked of the high horse by nature herself.
short funny essays, easy read. |
Positive | slubberdegulion | On Jan 16, 2005, slubberdegulion wrote: Most gardeners probably have already read Henry Mitchell's essays, but to those who haven't, you're in for a treat! His essays are fun and full of good advice (and opinion!). Many are laugh-out-loud funny. He makes me want to run out and do things in the garden; but more importantly, he makes me feel like I'm perfectly capable of doing things out there. His books are among my very favorite garden writing. |
