All B. davdii cultivars and hybrids require weekly deadheading for them to look and bloom its best.

Butterfly bushes may be good nectar sources for adult butterflies, but they are not food sources for the caterpillars of any Lepidoptera native to the continental US.

In some places, B. davidii can be an invasive weed: England, France, New Zealand, and the states of Oregon and Washington. It has naturalized in eastern N. America but is not considered invasive there. Recent cultivars are usually selected for dramatically reduced fertility.This species has naturalized along the west coast of N. America from BC to Califolia, and also in 17 eastern states.

The flowers are a very icy lavender color and the orange eyes just make them glow, especially in twilight. Very aromatic.

I had two davidii butterfly bushes in addition to my lochinch. The past 3 years the davidii became more and more diseased with curling powdery leaves and thin growth (I've noticed this on other butterfly bushes in my region). Even though I cut them to the ground last year the new growth was diseased and so this spring I dug them out. Now I have only the lochinch, which continues to grow and bloom utterly unaffected by disease. I'm very pleased with it and if I had more room I would plant a few more!
