| A note from morus_springs: |
| "I've gardened/orchard'ed most of my life. Was a master gardener in Ketchikan, Alaska and have done most of my gardening in California. I now "paint" the creosote/joshua desert with sycamore, pine, cypress, oak, cedar, ash, fruit and mulberry trees. Then I "flesh" in the understory it with grapes, wisteria, clematis and wisteria. Finally, I crawl around and "touch-up" the ground in greens. Sometimes I have to keep things in the greenhouse until the temperatures rise above 44 degrees or plant things inside because of the dryness outside. Just outside of Morus Springs there has been less than two inches of rain in the last year. No grass grew under the scrub and Joshua Trees for the first time in maybe 30 years. Just 5 years ago the desert bloomed and there were flowers and grass everywhere. Such are the rainfall extremes of this part of California. I believe there are more mountain oases than desert from my studies of Arabian Oases (many are now tourist destinations). Maybe, someday tourists will come to this mountain/desert oasis and see my painting :-)" |
