"I have about an acre of open land (about 6 wooded) 5 miles east Ithaca, NY. We are Zone 5, but in a frost pocket that makes planting frost-sensitive plants before Memorial Day pretty risky. (We are too farm from Cayuga Lake to feel its moderating effects. Downtown Ithaca, just 5 miles away, is a full Zone warmer.)
I have about 5,000 square feet of raised beds inside deer fencing where I grow mostly vegetables. As I have time, I'm planting perennial beds all over the open ground, emulating many of the style elements and plant pallette of Dutch designer Piet Oudolf. We're adjacent to a large wetland and much of our ground is heavy, poorly drained clay.
When I'm not gardening, I work as a communications specialist in the Department of Horticulture at Cornell University." |
