"In July, 2012, after O so long of renting, we bought a house, in San Jose! There are lemon and avocado trees already in residence, and we brought our nascent citrus orchard in pots, and started with straw bale gardening in our first year.
in March, 2014, we rented a rototiller and borrowed our friend Ben, dug up the front yard and built a 15'-square boxed bed, redwood on three sides and a curve of stacked trapezoidal bricks in the front. The theory is that if we're going to spend any water in drought, it'll be on vegetables! Xeriscape and dry-friendly flowers and veggies so far, and so good.
We had gardened in Redwood City for seven years, after having been six and a half years in the lovely, foggy Mission District of San Francisco: you can bet we put in a few too many tomatoes, just because we could!
Ruth is an academic editor, weaver & spinner & basket-maker, fiddles for dance and loves to sing early music. Lise is a Library Director for a small graduate school in SF, teaches dance, and sews like nobody's business. " |
