" I'm a portrait painter who enjoys spending as much time in the garden as I do in the Atlier. I've lived in a wide range of environments and growing zones (Atlantic-States in America, the Deep South and New Orleans, the Pacific Northwest, Kanazawa in Japan, Bayreuth in Germany, and Trentino in Northern Italy), so I have experience adapting to change, both in life and in tending the green and growing. I've been involved for the past decade or more in restoring a farmhouse from the Baroque period, and rebuilding it's farming terraces with traditional methods (dry native stone and earth). Each piece of ground which has been renewed has been transformed into a garden of special character--
A garden for healing herbs and flowers, an Orto (kitchen garden) for fresh vegetables and salads during the temperate season, a collection of English roses, a woodland garden, and more--
all managed on the scale of one terrace at a time.
I like to grow perennials, flowering bulbs and self-seeding flowers (time-management is important when all of my important pursuits require daylight), follow the tradition of protecting native plants and their natural ranges, and am involved in sustainable culture.
I've also won awards for ecological packaging design and production and, though I don't work in communications or graphic design any longer, efforts to keep our culture and it's “by-products” sustainable are still of great interest to me.
As with the garden, having a plan and working gently are ways which ensure success.
Oh and, by the way, my avatar at Dave's Garden?
Circe was a minor goddess, daughter of the sun and the patron of medicinal and healing plants.
I'm still a big fan of the Chelsea Physic Garden in England, and of the tradition for wildcrafting and keeping the knowledge of medicinal use for plants alive and well. " |
