King Sago [Cycas revoluta] with a "pup" in the foreground.

Bloom of the female King Sago. Maybe a hundred seeds will set under that fluffy looking stuff. Seeds will be bright orange and the size of a walnut when ripe.
by IslandJim Sep 29, 2002 8:38 AM
This is the male bloom of the king sago cycad. I think it's interesting how it resembles the female bloom of many conifers.

The seed "baskets" look medusa-like. The parts tenderly holding the seeds resemble delicate hands. The seeds are covered by a somewhat fuzzy material which I cleaned off of one to show the Easter egg color. There are many, many seeds inside the "basket". (San Antonio, Tx,)
by htop Oct 24, 2003 7:08 PM
I was amazed to find 100s of seeds in the sago palm's "basket" when I peered inside. The seeds are covered with a furry substance which holds debris that has fallen into the "basket". I left the seeds as found, did not clean them off and rplaced their covering back on them. (San Antonio, Tx.)
by htop Oct 25, 2003 4:15 PM
Dried seeds found under a sago palm. The one at the top still has the outer reddish colored coating on it. I am sorry I forget to put a coin to show their size. (San Antonio, Tx.)
