It is similar to the more common Lancewood (Pseudopanax crassifolius) but with more prominently tooth-shaped leaves. The stiff juvenile leaves are dark grey, narrow, and up to 40 cm long, and at maturity become shorter, wider and dark green in colour, and the tree itself changes from one central stem with downward growing leaves to a more typical tree shape.
