I've always been intrigued with Applejack rose , as it is one of the few roses that has a green apple scent to its...Read More foliage. Among the apple scented foliage are Eglanteria species roses and its hybrids - such as Sweet Briar rose , Lady Penzance rose , Manning's Blush rose .
I ended up choosing Applejack rose - a modern hybrid by Dr. Buck - due to it's availability and repeat bloom. The other Eglanteria species and hybrids are once blooming , which is a " No " for me. I got my Applejack rose from High Country Roses. The plant arrived quickly , and was very healthy. The buds started forming 2 to 3 weeks after I received it. The leaves have a hay - like fragrance , which is the same scent as the leaves of German Chamomile - Matricaria recutita , which is also described as having the scent of green apples.
I am very pleased with my Applejack rose. It has good disease resistance , has nice scented foliage , and has good repeat blooms. It has lanky canes though. I am growing in USDA Zone 9A , with very High Humidity.

The semidouble flowers are large (4"), with a strong fruity fragrance. They bloom in flushes all season.
Too big for many gardens, it typically grows 8-10' tall and wide, with thick stiff canes and growth that is hard to restrain.
The seed parent was the sweetbriar hybrid 'Goldbusch'. The pollen parent was a cross between the sweetbriar hybrid 'Josef Rothmund' and R. laxa 'Semipalatinsk'. It has the foliage fragrance (reminiscent of apples) of the sweetbriar roses.
There seems to be some confusion about this cultivar. The 'Applejack' we grow in Camden, ME is nearly single, and could make a good pilla...Read Morer rose. It is very winter hardy, slightly fragrant, and a great match for 'Goldbusch' which is next to it. However, it is prone to blackspot, and defoliates every summer.
