Glossy Abelia 'Rose Creek'

I've had one of these plants in my yard for 7 years, and disagree with some of the descriptions of it. Although it's a good plant overall...Read More, it seems a bit overrated. Its best qualities are the low maintenance requirements and that it flowers for a very long time. It's overrated in the following ways: The fragrance is so faint you need to be standing within a foot or two to detect it. In zone 7 Virginia, it's not evergreen by any stretch. Its growth habit is slightly irregular and it "throws whips," defying attempts to keep it as a round ball. And it's not a pollinator plant in our climate. I'll admit Carpenter bees forage on it occasionally, but they aren't very enthusiastic about it.

The bees and butterflies and birds came the next day and have not stopped coming. I have shade in the morning and both shade and sun after 10:30am. This is my first Abelia, and will not be my last. They are 4 months old, worth every penny, helping Nature, helping residents, definitely putting a smile on my face daily.

However, it grows back quickly, like a buddleia, and blooms all summer as usual, as it blooms on new growth. This is an exceptionally long-blooming plant. After the white corolla falls, the dark red sepals remain ornamental and extend the floral display for months.

This is an exceptional landscape plant, not planted here nearly as often as it deserves. Tough and adaptable, it will tolerate some shade. The purple/red tones in the glossy foliage make it especially valuable.

'Rose Creek' is said to be the most floriferous and longest blooming cultivar of glossy abelia, and pics back this up.

I have several Rose Creek in part shade. Although they don't bloom much, they are very lush and healthy. Since i didn't buy them for the bloom, i'm happy. This spring I planted several in full sun and they look awful. I check the soil before I water, but they just look like they're burning up.
I love this plant, but don't think they appreciate full Texas sun.
