It looks very...Read More much like the previous owners paid absolutely no attention to these plants, allowing an unknown pest to eat most of the leaves in a haphazard (pest-like) way.
I cut back the most damaged leaves, more severely on one plant than the other (to see which plant prospers the most by doing this), added a small amount of manure and a full layer of mulch to the soil around the plants, then watered them a couple of times after a long dry spell of weather.
Both plants responded almost immediately by sending up from their centres a number of new (delicate shade of purple) leaves.
It looks like a beautiful new beginning for these plants.

Although the foliage was a bit damaged it grew away well in spring, forming a nice trunk. All who saw it were envious. It certainly brightens a border and commands attention.
