Native to the western Mediterranean, this marginally frost-hardy species is the most striking in flower of all lavenders, at least in some of its varied forms. A small neat shrub 20-30" high, it has pine-scented, narrow silvery green leaves with inward-curling edges. In late spring and summer it is covered with spikes of deep purple flowers. Several bracts at the apex of each spike are elongated into pinkish purple 'rabbit ears' of varying size.

Cultivation:
These plants prefer full sun and fertile, well-drained soil; they will thrive in both acid and alkaline soils. The woodier species such as L dentata are excellent as low hedges, and a light trim after blooming keeps them neat. Hardiness varies with the species, although most are moderately frost hardy if the growth is well ripened by warm fall weather. Popagate from seed or cuttings in summer.
