I had learned in an ethnobotany class that if you are in the woods and are thirsty with no water, that you can chew on these leaves to help yourself. I have eaten them in salads before, it didn't seem to do anything for my thirst though. I suppose it didn't make me thirstier either, just sort of took my mind off of it. It also sometimes makes a little tiny fruit that is sort of lemony also.
