White firs planted amongst large pines do not survive, but they do outstanding when planted almost anywhere else. I do believe this is due to the higher acidic level near pines (particularly some of my full grown Virginia pines). Concolors seem to prefer more neutral to alkaline soils. I am open to being quite wrong about this however.
