Ripe fruit "pod" is as the name suggests, bitter. But, the seeds inside of the ripe fruit are covered in a red pulp that is very tasty and lightly sweet, the seeds themselves are a white color. The green or unripe fruits are often used in various dishes.

Flowers are a small and delicate pale yellow and open fully in shade and partially or even fully close in direct sunlight.

Plant is viney and can climb quite high if given the opportunity. Am currently using this as a fence "covering" mixed with Passiflora Belotii and the combo in early fall looks great with the purple passion flowers contrasting with the bright orange fruits of this little gourd.
