Taken on 9th June 2008, Lincoln UK. A male eating aphids off Lupins.

Taken on 16th June 2008. A male with 3 young, he was feeding them with peanuts hung on my pergola.
by wallaby1 Dec 26, 2008 3:11 AM
The three young waiting in the background to be fed. The male at front left seems to be a lookout. The male on the right has white breast and underwing feathers with richer coloured back feathers.

On 16th June, a female about to feed one of the young with 'weeds' to us, salad to them. It is important not to poison these weeds!
by wallaby1 Dec 26, 2008 3:23 AM
The 'salad' is Sheep's Sorrel (Rumex acetosella) which I had always considered a nuisance. Not so much now, as it provides food.

Mom, I can't swallow it..

I think I'm gonna be sick.

Now come along junior, it is good for you!
by wallaby1 Dec 26, 2008 3:30 AM
That's a good boy! Your brothers eat their greens too! It looked to me like the female fed males, while the male fed the females.

On 3rd April, after mating, female on the left, male on the right. They nest under older rooves which have air gaps, many modern houses have these blocked off.
by wallaby1 Dec 26, 2008 3:38 AM
A male with a feather shortly before a mating session. Maybe the term 'feather the nest' comes from this!

A beak full of tasty grubs for the young. Look after the Sparrows and they will eat your garden bugs. It's not only Ladybirds which eat aphids, Sparrows do a good job of ridding those too.

With his feathers all puffed up he looks bigger than the door.

This youngster was trapped in our woodburning stove- he came down the chimney and couldn't get back out.

I am told that the House Sparrows are the creators of these dust bath pockets. I have watched them gather in small flocks and flutter about to powder their "hair."

One of two pics of this bird's nest. Note that it is tucked into the eaves, within a space about 5 inches deep, with a pathway out one end of the nest. The remainder filled the entire space.
by Twincol Sep 14, 2009 6:48 AM
This is the second pic of the previously-posted nest; observe how tidy, long and deep it is, with the single pathway entering/exiting the next. Two clutches from this nest this year.
by Twincol Sep 14, 2009 6:54 AM
Lastly, a second nest tucked nearby, about 3 feet away. Not at all neat and tidy or organized. Smaller, fluffier, ball-shaped. Heaven knows how they entered or emerged.
