Amphipoda
Amphipods
An amphipod is similar in appearance to a shrimp and is commonly mistaken for one. They range from 5 to 20 millimeters in length and have at least seven distinct thoracic segments that bear leg-like appendages. The terrestrial species' colors range from pale brown to dark brown or green while the aquatic species are generally white. However, regardless of their normal color, all amphipods turn a bright red when they die, similar to shrimp. The female deposits her eggs in a pouch on the underside of her body where they will hatch in one to three weeks. The young reside in the pouch until the female has her first molt, which can be anywhere from one to eight days later. They mature in less than a year.
