Basommatophora
Pond snail
Basommatophora is a group of snails which have flat shells and narrow openings. Basommatophorans are carnivorous, preferring to eat crushed, dead or dying insects and other snails. Instead of laying eggs, these hermaproditic snails give live birth in a brood pouch that can hold anywhere from 30-220 shelled miniatures at one time. They become sexually active only after they reach a certain size, regardless of age. Basommatophora snails tend to live in swamps, streams, and small rivers and can usually be found in large groups on logs or under stones. They are most active during the late winter or early spring.
