Hymenoptera (part 3)
Wasps
Wasps are flying insects that are related to bees and ants. There?s an estimated 30,000 species of wasps found worldwide, except in Polar Regions. Wasps are typically solitary insects and only a few species are social. They mainly feed on nectar but they also forage on insects, spiders and fruit. Wasps spend most of their lives creating honeycombed nests that are either buried in the ground or created with mud and wood attached to trees or walls. Humans fear them, but wasps prey on insects that can damage crops, making them a natural pest controller.
