Homoptera
Cicadas, Hoppers and Aphids
This family of insects presents one of the largest threats to farmers and gardeners. There are 50,000 to 80,000 different species of true bugs, including squash bugs, cicadas, aphids, planthoppers, leafhoppers, shield bugs and others. Some species are herbivores while others are carnivorous and a few are even parasites. They have sucking mouth parts that allow the insect to pull off a piece of plant or flesh and suck the juice out. When it comes to breeding, the female does not always need a male to fertilize her eggs as during certain life cycles, she may lay unfertilized ones that are clones of herself.
