I have 6 clusters of Flying Dragon growing and contemplating somehow separating the clumps which looks like it could yield 31 individual plants. They range in size from 4 feet to over 6 foot and grow in partial shade. Although I have noticed the taller clusters have more sun. I grew them from saplings and it took about 4 years before the first flowering and another year for the fruit to follow a flowering. Bees, & wasps, enjoy the flowers. I haven't seen many butterflies near them and the flower is not one a Hummingbird would even consider due to how flat they are compared to the usual Hummingbird flower selections.
The base of the plants have formed a kind of brownish bark. The old growth is a lovely dark green, and new growth is a wonderful spring green and has a kind of pearl sheen. The thorns are epic and the deer avoid them. So do most creatures who have explored them. Although a few birds have attempted to build nests in them, I haven't witnessed a successful nest. I have a few ideas that could help them but haven't had time to implement the ideas in time for nesting season. They grow wide and I can kind of shape the growth. I have found that incorporating clippings into branch & twine garden fences around my rose bushes keeps the cat from releasing his toxic blader on them. The clippings turn from the dark green to a nice light yellow. The thorns hurt just as much too. I have thought of trying to fashion sewing needles from the thorns.
I am working out when would be the best time to try and separate one of the clusters. I'm also wondering how much to prune off in order to be able to safely(ish) handle the plants. The reason for wanting to separate the clusters is due to lack of fruit this year. I have seen a single stalked bush about 45 min west of me covered in fruit. I suspect clustering decreases the plants' ability to fruit.
