Alocasia Species
Alocasia odora

Odora is frequently undervalued due to confusion with the much smaller Alocasia gageana.

When they are young, Alocasia odora looks like Alocasia gageana (a.k.a. Alocasia californica or Alocasia California). Because commercial growers only see small plants before shipping them out, Alocasia gageana is commonly mislabeled, sold and traded as Alocasia odora.

While Odora gets huge (I've seen 6' leaves, and I've transplanted trunks that weighted 100 lbs), Gageana only grows 3' tall with 10" leaves. Unlike Odora, Gageana multiplies rapidly in clumps.

Availability of Gageana (sold as Odora) has increased, and a true Alocasia odora has become quite hard to find. The overall result is that most garden centers and nurseries, as well as eBay sellers, now think that Odora is a small, common Alocasia, while the opposite is true.

To add to the confusion, these two species have been crossed to produce Alocasia Calidora, which is also identical to the other two when young, but grows to 5'. Alocasia Calidora is known as Persian Palm, but that name is incorrectly applied to many plants now.

True Alocasia odora is a vigorous grower, so be sure you can handle it before taking on this giant.

Hosta Species
Hosta plantaginea

Hosta plantaginea is a specie plant and the ancestor of most large-flowered, fragrant hostas.

The leaves make a nice mound, but I grow it for the beautiful, fragrant, white lily flowers that bloom on tall stalks for a full month in mid summer.

If you're a sushi lover, this is Purple Shiso, the colorful version of the spicy saw-edged green leaf served with your favorite dishes. Try this variation the next time you order take-out, delivery or have left overs.

Not a sushi fan? How about garden drama?

In the course of a summer, one volunteer in my garden grew to at least five feet tall and three feet wide, with a strong, self-supporting central trunk surrounded by this deep purple mass of curls evenly tipped with flowers that are irresistible to butterflies and hummingbirds.

The plants I have now (1-2' tall in late June, 2013) will take off as soon as they put down a few roots.
