Kniphofia
Kniphofia uvaria

I have a half a dozen plants from 2 of 3 original planted survivors after 3 years in poor hard dry sandy low nutrient soil. They're said to be hardy to Zone 5 but they sure take a beating from the wind. In the right location this plant will survive just like yucca. My experience indicates my specific variety is a strong USDA Zone 4 plant almost as strong as Iris.

We're delighted with this plants hardiness. We found it needs more sun than it was getting so have moved it recently.

Scabiosa
Scabiosa columbaria

Nice addition to any flower garden. don't quite believe it is a Zone 3-4 plant. Based on my experience it is a strong Zone 5 winter hardy plant. Self seeds in the spring profusely but most seedlings seem to die as temperature warm. Requires daily watering in the dry summer ..... a bit of moisture than some and is not particularly well suited for desert conditions. If you have the time or the facilities to keep it wet ... it thrives. The root ball can be easily divided every year in the spring.

Jacobaea Species
Senecio bicolor subsp. cineraria

Dusty Miller thrives in our region. It is a pleasant diversion from the ordinary garden colors. Poisonous or long term lethal if ingested so don't let the kids play with it.

Symphyotrichum
Symphyotrichum dumosum

This plant is has been hybridized in pink, red, blue, lavender, purple & white. I have purple and lavender .... it is particularly well suited for the Yakima Valley .... probably the best of all aster varieties for our microclimate. May be winter tolerant down to Zone 3. Each year the plants grows to about 18 inches in circumference with several hundred flowers on the shrub/bush. Bees go crazy for this plant. We started with a few plants and now we have about 20 in spots all over place. I have less than $3.00 invested in all our Asters combined.

Syringa
Syringa vulgaris

a Zone 3 shrub that thrives in this region. I've seen every color somewhere yellow being the least common. blue, purple, red, white, lilac all smell terrrific and will forever be popular here.
