| Mesembryanthemum Aptenia cordifolia This is a lovely, small-leaved variety of "Ice Plant" (so called for the "glittery" appearance of the leaves when you look close, I think, but it might refer to its hardiness, too, as many of these species can handle temps down to zone 6. this one can do zone 8, I think). | Chlorophytum Species Chlorophytum comosum The regular green variety everyone's likely familiar with. :) It may be possible to overwinter these outside in our zone 8b winters. | Commelina Species Commelina communis Some call it a weed- I call it pretty. :) I got this one from the Mum-In-Law's yard as a cutting, and it's exploded into neato trailing vines that seem to flower every couple of days into tiny blue pretties that only last a day, thus the name. It's opportunistic and can be invasive, so if you try growing this, I'd suggest a hanging-planter to keep it isolated from ground-plants. | Dracaena Species Dracaena arborea Showed up as a volunteer in pot of soil I'd gotten from the in-laws. Their neighbour has a big Dragon Tree in their yard that regularly fruits. :-) I'm pretty sure this is arborea, since nothing else seems to have the long, strap-like leaves of this guy. | Epipremnum Epipremnum aureum I rescued a big hanging planter of this vine, and it sprang back from it's dried out ordeal literally within days. | Opuntia Species Opuntia microdasys var. pallida This is a tough little plant- it can sit without water for literally months, even withering, and plant it, water it, and it plumps up and starts growing. Grows like gang-busters when it's happy. But my hubby hates the because of the glochids (those near-invisible thorns that get in you and impossible to find. I use my tongue! | Spathiphyllum Species Spathiphyllum wallisii This one I've had for years, and it just doesn't DIE, which is awesome, since I didn't know the first thing about how to care for it at first. I inherited mine from my former room-mate- sort of- I had re-potted her gigantic and crowded plant, dividing it into two big groups. I got to keep one and she kept the other. Mine travelled with me all the way down to Valley Village (and later out to Crestline),California from Winnipeg, Manitoba and it's bloomed a number of times... I think it's due for another division. | Nephthytis Syngonium podophyllum Nephthytis, or Arrowhead Vine to many, this plant is just NEAT. I've always liked them. I have three, now, but two aren't big enough to take cuttings from yet- shouldn't be long, though. :) The third has gotten massive since I last made this entry- I can easily take cuttings from her. While I'm pretty sure mine is the "Imperial White" or "Albo-variegatum" variety which goes nearly all white with a bright green edge and some speckles of green on larger leaves. The younger ones have the white-veined green, like in the photo of 'Imperial White', and there are some leaves that have the nearly all-white colouration in that pic, so maybe it's that cultivar after all. :) | 'Imperial White' | Plants, Cuttings | (PlantFiles) |
| Tradescantia Tradescantia pallida I'm a bad dragon- I nipped a cutting of this oh, so pretty rich purple beastie from a bed of plants outside an empty-office building. The original planter was ignored and neglected- had been for months- but it amazed me how these things just kept going! Now, I have a few lovely- and healthy- plants that I hope to divide and propagate, soon. | Tradescantia Species Tradescantia spathacea Some folks call this Oyster Plant, Moses-In-A-Basket, etc. There are a couple of varieties-mine is the deep purple one with the insides of the leaves a rich, bright green It grows pretty fast in the right conditions. It's a little grumpy, 'cuz I didn't know it preferred filtered light to light shade in our blistering summers and the Stellar's Jays and the chippies keep poking at the poor thing when it's outside. I put it in a more protected spot, water it more and it seems to be recovering. I got mine from an estate sale, and it was in sad shape- hopefully, I'll have it back up to snuff in a few months.
