Rhubarb

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Has anyone planted Rhubarb in their gardens?
I'd love some but dont remember when to put the root in the ground.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I just planted some some rhubarb seeds this past March.

I am not sure about them, at all, but my hunch is they aren't too fussy.

The neighbor's has been growing in the same spot for probably 30 or 40 years now.

Here is a shot of my seedlings, which have just been repotted, as I have yet to decide where to put them.

I could send you one when I send you your variegated jade this week.

You are DEFINATLY on. Id love a rubarb plant and the Jade is always welcome.
Have you ever heard of anyone growing Barb in a container?

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I have not seen, nor heard of one growing rhubarb in a container. I don't think the rhubarb would mind at all, given the right size to grow in.

This rhubarb I received in the round robin seed box that went around (Allison's Donation). Maybe she has some insight on how temperamental they are.

Rhubarb 'Glaskin's Perpetual' is what I am growing from Allison's seeds.

(Thanks Allison!! if you chime in on reading this thread!!)

Thanks, Allison!

I am looking for good sites that have useful information on growing and using Rhubarb

Seems they say growing from seed is not recommended. Pah! I'll show them!

My grandparents always had huge plants near the out-house,guess theyre heavy feeders

So far, I am gleaning that they will survive neglect but thrive on attention.

Auntie has hers in the field, about 20 ft from where the lawn stops. It's been there since I have(23-24 years) if not longer. She mows one path to it and does nothing else. It's a huge patch....we never use it all up. It's planted in full sun and totally neglected. ^_^

Sounds just like my neighbor.

Theirs has been planted up against the south facing side of their lawnmower shed - Full sun. They do nothing to it. They don't even weed around it, just mow the lawn right up to it.

I am reading that rhubarb does not like competition, to weed and mulch well around it. Guess it all boils down to location, location, location!

Hummmmmm I think it will be OK where I plan to put it

Rhinebeck, NY(Zone 5b)

Does anyone know if the deer eat it? How about the chucks?

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Something has been making holes in the leaves of mine, but they don't look chomped or munched, and they are right where the deer frollic. I'm not sure what has been nibbling the leaves.
