There are a few maple trees (including mine) that have leaves turning black and falling. It seems to be affecting the soft maples. A friend 50 miles away said hers was doing the same. Any ideas?
Maple leaves turning black and falling, what could this be?
Two things come to mind - Maple Anthracnose and Maple petiole borer. With maple petiole borer the leaves that fall off are usually still green though. Without a picture I'm guessing that it's Anthracnose. It's common during wet spring weather. Can you post a picture of an affected leaf still atached to the tree?
One other option is freeze damage.
