FREEZE WARNING FOR TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

I usually never plant my garden till I see two straight weeks of above 40 degree temperatures. This year I decided to go with Accuview weather forecast and they predicted above 40 degrees for the next two weeks so we planted our garden last week. This morning I got the following alert in my email. I thought I'd pass it along for those of you who were early planters and may want to cover your plants with something tonight.

COLD TEMPS EXPECTED TONIGHT.

.COLD AIR FROM ONTARIO WILL FILTER INTO N. MI TONIGHT
BEHIND A COLD FRONT WHICH WILL MOVE OVER THE STATE THIS
AFTERNOON. HIGH PRESSURE WILL BUILD INTO THE GREAT LAKES REGION
TONIGHT.WHICH WILL GENERATE MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES & LIGHT WINDS
WHICH WILL AID IN THE COLDER TEMPS READINGS EARLY SUNDAY.

Thank you Brenda. Did someone forget to tell Mother Nature that Monday is the first day of JUNE? LOL Michigan is sure having a rough go of things lately. Seems to me last year we had to put garbage bags over all of the tomato cages too. I think we all need our own greenhouses!

Mary Ellen

Kalamazoo, MI

Oh dear. Just talked to a friend in Escanaba yesterday. She's just put her annuals in.

Traverse City, MI

Rats! I haven't put my annuals in yet (never do until June) but I'm worried about all that tender new growth on my roses, including lots of basal breaks. Looks like I'll have to cover them all up tonight, especially those in the lower gardens. I was really hoping that wouldn't happen this year. Our apples and peaches and cherries are through blooming now - I'm hoping they are not as vulnerable as they were when they were in bloom.

Grand Haven, MI(Zone 5a)

Oh the joys of NOT living up North! It will get down to 46 here.

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

we are not suppose to get freeze or frost tonight I hope there telling the truth ;0( its still 71 out side
Gloria

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

my mators and peppers are in the ground!!!!!
hope they got this one right!

This time my county of Arenac is not mentioned. I sure hope they have it right. I'm tempted to run out and cover everything up but my husband doesn't want to. He said if they die we'll just buy more and replant. He did say next year we're not planting a thing till June. I agree. We went through covering up everything last year. Not fun.

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

no frost or freeze here last night how is every one else ?
Gloria

Caro, MI(Zone 5a)

Cold here, but I think we made it through alright! :)

Mary Ellen

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

no frost here! :)

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

It was 34 degrees at my house when I woke up at 5 this morning. THe sensor is right up by the house so out in the field it may have been a degree colder. I looked outside and it looked like there was a light frost. I went outside in my nightgown and turned the water on the veggie garden. I've learned that if you water the plants before the sun hits them then the damage is less. I let the water run for an hour then turned it off. I'll know better once I get out to take a look for myself. I usually plant annuals that can take a light frost like verbenea, petunias and marigolds. I won't plant begonias or impatients. They suffer greatly from a light frost. I'm most worried about my tomatoes and pepper plants. They love the heat. I looked at the long range forecast and it's going to stay pretty cool for the next two weeks.........only getting into the 60's or so. I like the cool weather but I don't think my tomatoes will. :) Oh well we take what we get eh? I hope my sweet potato vines made it.

Traverse City, MI

No frost last night, but I'm still glad I covered my most tender roses.

Macomb, MI(Zone 5b)

Thats a relief Karen...it's really cool down here though....yesterday I went and bought some geranium, vinca vine, asparagus grass, sweet potato vine, some beautiful orange colored coleus & some mexican feather grass for 2 of my hanging baskets and a planter....they all made it I didn't put them in....I was cringing when I went to look at them...I thought I was gonna be in trouble...but it was all good! shewwww

Bad Axe, Mich., FL(Zone 5a)

I just got home last night from 3 days at Special Olympics State Summer Games and didn't check the forecast. It was 34* here this am and I checked my tomatoes in the Earthbox next to the house and they look ok, no thanks to me. My Knockout Roses are still blooming, which is a testament to the hardiness of that brand of roses.

Hastings, MI(Zone 5b)

Oh for gosh sake.
I just spent the entire day, 3 of us planting like mad, and DH fencing the garden in.
We also put in about 1/2 of the flower perennial gardens.
My tomatoes this year are leggy, and sickly looking from zero to 91 degrees in
one day. They just got confused.

I lost many lettuce, all spinach and stuff like that.

sigh. I love the spring this year in michigan, its the first in 11 years that I can
recall where it rained a good amount, but not a deluge day after day after day,
nor did it not rain at all and just go to 80 hot dry sun day after day after day.

I think I would like to have a hoop house. That might be next on my plans.
I could make the hoops out of rebar into wood bases and cover it with
that double polyurethane bubble greenhouse pane plastic stuff.
Leave the ends open for May thru July I guess.
My friends have been growing tomatoes since February in their
hoop house with a wood stove for heat. I need to get over there to
see their set up.

I hope everyone gets through this freeze ok.
We lost all our blossoms on all our fruit trees. another year shot.

Grand Haven, MI(Zone 5a)

That is so sad!!! :-(

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

My sweet potato vines look kind of sad. I hope they will recover

Bad Axe, Mich., FL(Zone 5a)

Mine do, too. All that's left is the stems with a few shreds of leaf.

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

UGH!
I give up!
I want to move to Florida.

Caro, MI(Zone 5a)

But Rose, the creepy crawlies get awfully big in Florida............. LOL

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

Well each climate has its pro's & con's hey, but the older I get the less I can handle our winters.

Hastings, MI(Zone 5b)

CR
I think California is the place you ought to be. Farm livin...is the life for thee.
Pack up and move to Beverlee, hills that is.

LOL.
San Diego has the USA most perfect temperature all year round.
Sheri

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

Ok lets GO!

Bad Axe, Mich., FL(Zone 5a)

You'd get bored without season changes. I spend the winter in Florida and I don't look foreward to spring like I used to, LOL. It's nice to get out of the cold and snow, but the season changes are missed.I suppose I can get used to it, but have been doing this for about 10 years.

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

Season changes are nice BUT the long cold winters aren't.
Oh I'm not going anywhere but I'm definitely beginning to understand why the old fogies go to Florida every winter.

Grand Haven, MI(Zone 5a)

*I* wouldn't be bored by perpetual warm weather. We just got our huge electric bill. Mostly caused because the furnace fan ran so much! Even though we heat with gas, this winter was so bad, the electric bill for the fan QUADRUPLED!

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

I think gverything has gone thru the ceiling.
Even buying groceries is scary nowadays.
