Quilt Question from a Non-quilter

(Chris) Des Moines, IA(Zone 5a)

In memory of my late husband, I was thinking of making a lap quilt (not sure if that's the right name) out of some of his shirts for myself and our kids.
My question is about the type of material I want to use. He loved Hawaiian shirts, so most of them would be satin, silk or a silk mixture. Is it possible to do a quilt with that material? I was thinking of blocks from the shirts with blocks of solid colors (cotton blend? what would be best?) inbetween.. the final quilt would be about 36" x 48".

Since I've never done anything like this before.. is this do-able?? Where would I find a pattern for a novice? I do own a sewing machine, so I at least know how to run one :)

thanks for your help,
Chris
