Why birds not eat crabapples?

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

I have a couple Donald Wyman crabapple trees that had a lot of fruit this last winter, but no birds ate the fruit. Even the robins that came back a bit early, and ate all my neighbor's crabapples, they landed in my tree but didn't eat. There were only a few left - the squirrels enjoyed them all winter (so they can't be THAT bad tasting).

Any ideas on why?

Haven't a clue, evie; the birds here literally fight over the crabapples as soon as they begin to ripen; within a day or at most two, there's not a single fruit left!
