Bird damage to fruit bloom

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

This year there has been an exceptionally large White Crown Sparrow eruption. Literally hundreds of the came in early April and are still here. Usually they arrive in April and leave early May. I watched them in my large Rainier Cherry tree, clipping off the blooms and dropping them to the ground. The ground under the cherry tree looked like it had snowed. I can't see any blooms left at all and there was a really lovely bloom. I have no idea of what I could have done to prevent the damage, and why to they do that. They don't eat anything.
