Sweetgum Tree Losing 'Gumballs'

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

I have a sweetgum tree off my back patio so I'm pretty familiar with what I call it's 'shedding' habit. Toward end of summer and fall it drops the mature brown gumballs about 1" in diameter along with all its little seeds within the balls. My tree this year is dropping its gumballs still unmatured (green in color and only about 1/3" in size). Does anyone know why this might be happening??????????????? Or what I might do to make it healthier?

I have a sweetgum tree, each year in the spring it will loose some of its gunballs, the small green imuture size. Not sure if the tree just produces to many...maybe this is a natural way of pruning?

Our tree is about 40 years old and currently at its mature size.

Do you have a picture of your tree? Also check the bottom of the trunk and make sure there are no bore holes.

Bad pollination this year? Maybe very wet during the normal pollination period?

Ah, it was RATHER wet around here in Spring. I'll see if I can take a pic. It looks otherwise healthy and I estimate its height at about 45-50' tall.
