They really are beautiful, but in the few decades they've been in Western Australia have proved detrimental to other, less exuberant species. They are also ear-splittingly noisy. They gather in the early evening in the Norfolk Island pines by the beach and it is impossible to converse because of the noise.

So they were imported from somewhere else? That doesn't usually work out too well. Or did they slowly migrate on their own?

OMG...the noise doesn't sound pleasant at all. :o)

They are native to Queensland and other areas of the eastern states, on the other side of the continent. No one knows for certain how they came to Western Australia, maybe in shipments of fruit. They might have been escaped aviary birds or deliberately released aviary birds. However they came to be here, they are a declared pest in Western Australia. https://www.agric.wa.gov.au/birds/rainbow-lorikeet

OMG...thanks for that link! It just goes to show how deceiving looks can be.
I know we have "introduced" birds over here that have become pests, but I never really thought about the same thing occurring in other parts of the world.
