Cryptic Gardening #5
Here is an easy? one to start with.
Genus = A biblical sibling in Australia
Species = Three time the latin flower
Have fun
Steve
and another. Little harder?
Genus - Sounds like the English Bobby said
Species - about part of the brain
Genus = Parched and a sun god
Species = A vine confused
That last one is Dryandra nivea.

Gardengal.
Your puzzle finished up OK the equine gift was the work of a genius, well close to.
With the Genus your orignal clue gave no hint of the digits that preceded Mahommet and I still can't see the family link but that could be because of my ignorance about Islamic names. Others might like to comment but I felt that your final hints made it a very good cryptic. Keep going because even if we can't solve them you can do as you did with this one and add more clues.
Brian
Spot on Gardengal Dryandra nivea.
Now back to 4 to catch up with the species
Steve
well I've had a look and Stakes right. That was a good cryptic and as mentioned before if it's not solved in a short time then throw a few more tidbits to get the fish nibbling!
Have got my 1950's gardening book in hand so watch out!
Budgie
>I still can't see the family link
Brian, Mahammad's family are the alis - the last part of the name.
Steve, if you're using a 1950's book, does that mean if there have been name changes your hints will be null an dvoid? lol
The best I can come up with for your first one here Steve is Abelia triflora, though I suspect the genus is probably wrong, as I really can't see where the 'in Australia' comes into it.
Hi Gardengal. Spot on. Abelia triflora.
In Australia = ia
Well done. That's two from three. You're on fire!
One to go.
(re the 1950's book. No translations! Should be fun!)
Budgie
G'Day
I think the English Bobby says "Aloe, Aloe, Aloe". Have to keep looking for the species.
Brian

This is a common name "Mr Gilchrist's face washer" botanically the genus is "A doing word and that which comes to the top".
Brian
Aloe Aloe Aloe! Stake's on track!
Hmmmm! The cricketer Gilchrist?
Budgie
That's him.
Brian
Adams Flannel is the common name for Verbascum thapsus
G'Day Kennedyh, You're spot on with that one. Can you help with the Aloe species I can't find one that looks even close?
Brian
Kennedyh. That was good.
Stake - I'll simplify the species to - three times the flower. (this was my first thought but
it was a little easy)
Budgie
Sorry Stake. Confused my puzzles!
The species clue is a little hard.
Find what species you can an put them into dictionary or look them up.
This will lead you on.
See what happens.
A little clue - starts with my initial.
Cheers
Budgie, steve
Genus - Sounds like the English Bobby said
Species - about part of the brain.
This species has me beat because "About' should be "Re" and part of the brain should be one of the many parts of the brain, but you say it starts with your initial which I take to be "S" the only one starting with "S" is A. sapinaria and that doesn't fit so I give up, beaten, thrashed & cowed. Also stonkered.
Brian
One to puzzl;e over.
Genus "Half a musical group plus small thanks"
Species "A little Agent and Printers measures"
Brian
I can't get the brain thing either, Steve, so I guess we give up.
Duranta repens
Your right again Kennedyh, that didn't take you long.
Try this one. Genus "The property around the ships destination, is first class"
Species Sounds like "Mr Mangles, is with the plants of a region"
Brian
Hi guys. Sorry been away.
I guess this one is a little 'astray' so here it is.
I use dictionary a lot. Sometimes if I can't think of a clue I will ask the dictionary.
I found an Aloe species, typed it into dictionary
and the result is as follows:
Aloe striata
Striata is short for corpus striatum
Corpus striatum is part of the brain
Let me know if in future you would like me to leave the dictionary alone!
I can't have brain meltdown on my conscience!
This one is interesting Stake. If we are talking Alby Mangles?
Interesting in that it is not a name you would think of in ten years and yet it was mentioned today
in conversation!
Steve
G'Day Budgieman, I think that the link between "A part of the brain" "Corpus striatum" and Striata is so remote that one would need a search warrant to find it. If it had been "Corpus striata" it would be a bit better but to be fair the clue should be. A Part of the brain "Corpus -------". How ever as long as you come good and give us the answer then we can't complain too much.
With mine it sounds like that bloke you mention.
Brian
Brian,
that makes your species into ..... albiflora,
but despite going through all the albiflora's in PlantFiles, I can't figure the genus!
Ken
G'Day Kennedyh, Rather strange there are 42 species in this Genus but only one in Plant Files and that isn't albiflora. It has a large white flower similar to a Brugmansia but they are not related not even the same family.
Brian
OK Stake. I stand corrected! No more dictionary.
Sounds like we need to work out the Genus first.
Is the ships destination a 'port'?
Don't you think it synchronistic that we mention the obscure name on the same day you post your cryptic?
We were coming into Albion Park on the way home and I, for some weird reason, thought of Alby Mangles.
I asked No. 1 what the name of his female companion was!
Spooky!
Budgie
Port yes.
Don't remember a female but he had a nice dog.
Brian
How could you not remember a female in a chamois bikini!
Bit worried that you can remember the dog and not the woman! Hmmmm!
So Port it is.
Thinking cap on!
Not 'Escallonia'?
Es = estate (property)
call = port of call
Reaching a lot!
Budgie
Not the Port itself. Chamois are for cleaning cars not swimming.
Brian
>thought of Alby Mangles.
I asked No. 1 what the name of his female companion was!
Oh come on! Which one?!!!!! I think there was a different one for each trip he did.
No gardengal. Only one. She was a hostess on Sale of the Century?
Know she was badly 'mangled' (excuse the pun) in a car accident during filming.
Hot Hot Hot.
Laughed a lot at chamois and car cleaning. Can't figure though how to lift her onto the bonnet!
Sorry off the track!
Not port but a port? (like Aden?)
Budgie
G'Day
I moved the clues down, now read the Genus one carefully.
Try this one. Genus "The property around the ships destination, is first class"
Species Sounds like "Mr Mangles, is with the plants of a region"
OK Stake.
For some reason:
Es = Estate (property)
Call = port of call
Onia = DestinatiON ia (A1)??????
Budgie
G'Day
No your on the wrong track. The clue gives you the whole name not parts of it.
Brian
Are we talking about a specific port Brain, or just generally?
Darn, I got all excited for a moment there.
'Banksia' occured to me, but there is not a B. albiflora. :(
Unless you're using an old book and there has been a name change Brain?
G'Day
No not a specific port any will do. As I told Budgieman "Read the Genus Clue again".
Are you OK Gardengal our news say SE Qld is copping some wild weather?
Brian
