Best Red Monarda ?

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I'm looking for a red Monarda.... i had originally heard of Jacob's Cline, but now i see there are a few others.

Which one would be the best? longest bloom time, drought resistant, most vibrant etc.

Thanks -

Terese

Jacob Kline does well here because of the mildew resistance, but it's very tall. I've planted to new mini's this year, but they aren't very large yet

I was looking for some shorter ones, but wasn't looking for red.

Here is a pic of Raspberry Wine with Hyperion daylily. It does get tall...a good 4 feet here. I found it to be very mildew resistant in a thick 5ft diameter patch of it. No mildew problem at all. Jacob Kline has passed away of mildew twice for me in 2006 and 2007, so I tried RW and love it's color.

tcs,
I bought some Gardenview Scarlet at a nursery at the end of the season last year when everything was super cheep. It was done blooming when I bought it, and it's coming up nicely this spring. Since this is my first year with it, I don't have any experience with it, but I'd be happy to send you a clump of it if you want some . . .

I checked out the Plant Files, and it looks like some people did have some issues with powdery mildew:

I didn't have any trouble with mildew w/ Jacob Kline, but mildew isn't usually a problem with me - black spot is my nemesis

I found this link, and it shows bloom times of a few monarda's. It shows that Jacob Cline blooms for a longer period of time than gardenview scarlet . . .

'Fireball' is a nice one too. I don't have a picture off hand, but it is lovely. It's a bit shorter with very striking color.

pgt -- wow... that is very kind of you. I"d love a piece.

I'm leaving town in the Am and not sure how long i will be gone... few days to a week.

Just let me know how i can repay you.

OH -- currently the only Monarda I have is Wild Bergamot ... and even though the blooms are very pale, i love the plant.

i'm in the Exchange.

I want to mail tcs1366 some monarda, but don't know what the Exchange is. Is that where I can get her address?

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

pgt-- any "member" of Daves can list their address in the address exchange.
to find it.... and i believe you can only view it if you are listed...

but from the HOME page, click EXTRAS tab... in there you will find Address Exchange
then you click the first letter or number of the person's useName.

though you probably noticed i sent you my info in your Dmail.

irwells how long have you grown jacob cline in paris? isn't your soil sandy? neither mine nor a nearby friends's returned this year.

(Lynn) Paris, TX(Zone 7b)

I've had it for two years, and actually pulled it late last summer, because it was so tall, and was getting so much water it was sprawling everywhere. Didn't matter - still have just as much this year. I guess I'd characterize my soil as sandy loam.

I got a quart pot of Jacob Kline at a nursery. I didn't realize it would get so tall and didn't plant it with that in mind. Right now it's only about 18-20" tall. The stems were very tightly spaced, and I probably should have thinned them. It seemed to do some self-thinning around the outter edge as some stems fell over and withered away after planting. I probably would have done better with seed, but I've wanted them for a long time and it was so exciting to find a pot that I ignored the little voice in my head.

irwell maybe i need a sandy spot for this plant. i know it was found in ga. and so ought to be able to take the heat so that wasn't it. must be drainage?

now i think my friend dawn and i found a BLUE one. we saw it blooming on an old texas road. we haven;t seen the bloom in 2 yrs. because of our schedules but we both think it was blue. so if it turns out to be blue do you have enough red to swap me this fall? because if it really is blue me and dawn are going into the blue bee balm business and i'll have some money to buy a little sand. lol.

(Lynn) Paris, TX(Zone 7b)

I'll be glad to swap, although I have to warn you I've never collected seeds. You may have to walk me thru it. I'm eager to see how the dwarf ones will fare, because I think I'll like that size better.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

no, not seeds. plants? sorry to hijack yet another thread. dave needs to put some limits on my use of his site. lol.

(Lynn) Paris, TX(Zone 7b)

Plenty of plants, too

Is blue monarda unusual? I love blue, no matter what shade of blue. Mamajack, go get those beauties!

(Lynn) Paris, TX(Zone 7b)

I've never heard of a blue monarda

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

pam, there is no known blue monarda. lol. dawn and both said when we saw it that it was blue. now 2 yrs. later we sit around and say well maybe it was lavender. we'll know soon enough.
