Todd,
Sounds like you had a nice trip!
Ecuagenera sells something that looks like the flowering plant you posted at 9:52 am above which they name as Maxillaria embreei.

May Orchids in 2009
Raymond, you posted two more excellent reasons why I like Masdevallias. Both are very nice.
Kathy, the Coel. ochracea is very beautiful. You had fun today! I wanted to dig in the garden today, unfortunately it rained all day. I am so looking forwards to nice weather. DH was out golfing anyway, he came back totally soaked.
Great welcome home gift!!
If only my big feet could slip into those fuzzy slippers. It does look cypripedium-like. Speaking of cyps, saw my first nub on reginae today in the shade garden. (Actually part shade would be more accurate.) Can't wait to see if I'm cold enough for Cyp guttatum to come back-love that mini.
Very nice pics of a very cute Pleurothallis. Does yours spend the Summer outside?
Heh. Slippers - or fuzzy toilet bowls, as others call them.
Ursula, it goes outside in summer.
Boojum, look forwards to seeing your Cyps, hope they all come through.

Todd, thanks.
What a nice variety of stuff there is in Ecuador, isn't there! Nice pics, I'm sure many if not most of them can be named eventually. I wonder if you took notes (or remember) which ones were highland plants and which were lowland plants? - that would aid in identification and also be of interest.
Raymond.
I am such a maxillaria freak, I almost fell off my chair. That last one is my fav and it might be one that went to the orchid compost pile in the sky. Maxillaria pseudoreichenheimiana? Did it have spotty leaves?

Here's my sedirea for comparison, Ray.
Oh that's wonderful!!
Boojum, thanks for the comparative photo.
fangray, very nice. I'll keep my eye out for one!
Nice Sedireas!!
Mine is much closer to Boojum's regarding the greenish shade

Fangray, yours is very cute! That is a new one for me!
The Max pseudor..../reichenheimiana have spotted leaves and the flowers look really cute, like little attack doggies? I would think it is Todd's last posted / favorite grouping? Very, very nice pic, Todd!! It couldn't have been easy to take these good pics in the rain!
I spent a while ago some time to compare the two. Any one can see the difference? More or less color? Different speckle pattern?
Laurel, looking good with those red spikes!
huiray and Todd_Boland, you have so much nice South American orchid collections.
We dont have too much SA orchids available here in mailand of china expect some Catt hybrids.
Can davegardens' friends recommend some reliable SA orchids sources?
I have bought orchids from Ecuagenera (Ecuador) in the past. Some came without labels though. http://www.ecuagenera.com/epages/whitelabel4.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/ecuagenera
I recently bought some from Bela Vista (Brazil) http://www.bvorchids.com.br/en/geral/index.php but they will ship from Florida in mid May so I don't know if they are reliable yet. I have had some problems with the language barrier when trying to communicate with them (Portugues).
Here is Paph. Lynleigh Koopowitz today.
I have lots of black fly bites from the garden weeding. This is a tough time of year for me-my regular work, hustling some work for the summer, tons of hours weeding, putting down straw paths, pruning the 40 odd roses and bushes, planting new plants and watering daily for weeks, mulching, getting places ready for all the houseplants (orchids, hoyas, hippeastrum, epis, etc.), helping DBF cut saplings and brush, and sometime I hafta dig up that new extension garden for the beardless irises that pollyk is giving me for website pics. I'm also having a garden open house for friends and cohorts in June and an RU on June 20th. My shade garden is alive with color (mostly primroses and epimedium now and soon the trilliums). Tonite is town meeting night. I hope it's not 3 nights like last year!!
But my plants continue to wow. Here is Epi. Gitti Paetz that Ursula gave me in bloom this AM. Thank you, thank you!!!
Boojum,
Wow - such activity!!! I'm tired just reading about it.
Nice plants. The Paph has filled out a little more, I think?
fangray,
How are your import restrictions like? (Only you would know that)
There are various growers/nurseries wfrom South America who export plants around the world. Ecuagenera is one, as Boojum has mentioned. BTW I and others have had mixed results with getting plants from Ecuagenera when they ship them to you. The more delicate ones, like the Pleurothallids, can arrive in bad condition -because of the way they ship them, in my experience. I stress, this is my personal experience. Stronger types of plants, especially those with pseudobulbs - i.e. with reserves of energy/water/food - arrive in better shape. If I visit them when they exhibit at a show, however, I can usually find very good plants to bring home with me - i.e. I can select the ones I like.
Here are some other dealers/growers for South American orchids (which fall into the category we call 'New World Orchids'):
http://www.floralia.com.br/index.html
http://mirandaorchids.com/
http://www.orquivalle.com/
Here is the front webpage of something called the Redland International Orchid Festival, held in Florida and which is considered one of the largest orchid sales events in the US (some consider it THE best)(the "show" part is relatively small), which lists many dealers from South America - you might want to contact them if you really want to explore importing New World orchid plants: http://www.redlandorchidfestival.org/
Good luck,
Raymond.
fangray,
There are also several dealers/growers in the US who offer many New World orchids, but many of them do not ship internationally. Andy's Orchids (http://www.andysorchids.com/) has many, many very nice plants but they will ship only domestically in the US and territories. One grower who may ship to you is J&L, whose plants can be on the smaller side but are healthy plants: http://www.jlorchids.com/
Raymond.
Kathy, that sounds like work.:-)
It hasn't stopped raining yet in days to do anything outside around here. I am twin-sitting tomorrow, I do hope I can take the girls outside, or they will bounce off the walls.
Nice blooms. I am glad the so-called Gitti Paetz is doing well for you. I am not sure if I told you that it is mislabeled? I bought it with that name from Kakteen Haage in Germany, but I think it looks much closer to Roger Paetz? But I wouldn't swear to it either. In any case, it is very showy.

Raymond, about the Bulbo maximum. Mine is now at the same stage you posted yours. I am wondering if more than a couple of blooms are open at the same time?
Around here 2 Ascofinetia are opening spikes:
I posted the Ascofinetia Cherry Blossom 'Odoriko' the other day in the center of the "Neofinetia - ring", I took some better pictures of this one today.
Ursula,
Regarding the Bulbo maximum, right now I have three florets fully open...plus the 'done' flowers + the 'getting-ready-to-open' buds further along the spike.
Nice texture on the Ascofinetia.
Raymond.
Thanks.
So it seems that it will not have a full rachis open, the buds open in succession but they are short-lived.
