Sewing your own baby sling / maya wrap?

I am looking to buy a sling/wrap for a neice who has just adopted an infant. The maya wrap, for example, seems like a lot of fabric with out alot of compllications. Any of you familiar with sewing your own? I have seen instructions on line.
