Clem/Rose Pairings? Also, what blooms when?

Baton Rouge, LA

Calling all gardeners who have paired their clems with roses... please help me choose combinations! I've posted a list of all the clems I am planting, and I'd love to read your suggestions of what combinations work well for you. Also, if you happen to know when any of these specific clems bloom in zone 8b, I'd appreciate that info as well. Here's the link to my list:

Thanks so much for your help! Ev =)

I like Henryii with a deep red rose (Maybe Mr. Lincoln or Lavaglut). My Henrii is about to bloom now, and blooms intermittently until October or November.

I also like the light pastel "purpely" clematis' with Joseph's Coat for a nice soft tonal arrangement.

Thanks for the feedback, JLP... I have all three of those roses, so all of those pairings will work for me! =)

Edit: BTW, do you find that using your upright roses as a host plant causes problems at all? Do the clems choke out the rose bushes? I know for sure the climbers can handle the vining, but I wasn't sure about the upright roses. Thanks for any info!

If you can list the roses you have, I may be able to give you some more combinations. I love doing them.
Here is my Niobe with Coleus.

Very pretty! I'm excited to find someone who's growing clems so close to my home. Hammond and BR have identical weather! What other clems are performing well for you?

As for my roses, I've got quite a few. Here are three lists from my journal.

Roses in the formal "English" garden:

Roses in the casual "Secret" garden:

Roses in the new garden around the pool and along the back fence:

I still have some rose photos from my garden to upload to my journal, but many of the pics are posted already. I should note, the photos I have on my clem chart are borrowed from an educational site until my own plants bloom. The photos posted in my DG journal are all my photos from my garden.

Thanks for the help!

I really don't have that many Clematis. I have:

Niobe (3rd year)
Jackmanii (first year, just a baby)
Ms. Bateman (2nd year)
Henrii (big plant, bought full grown)

and another white that I am not sure about.

My roses:
Love and Peace
Abraham Darby
Sexy Rexy
Hot Cocoa (2)
Lavaglut - I cannot believe how long these flowers last! They still look perfect after all the rain we got and they have been open for about 3 weeks!

Ev, try your clematis in term of their color combination. I planted HF Young (light blue) with pale pink Comtese de Bourchard (like you see here) with the vibrant red rose: They turned out nicely:

On the oposite end of the flower bed; I planted a theme Red White and Blue (with clematis color) they also turned out very attractive.

I've read so many threads about roses and clems, and I agree that the combo is gorgeous. When you spray your roses and it has a clem climbing through it, does the spray harm the clem? Also, when you prune roses, what if the clem is a group 2 and doesn't need to be pruned? How do you handle this?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Fortunately most of my roses Don't require much spraying. Knock Out roses especially needs no spraying at all. My 'Cecile Brunner' climbing roses may need once or two a year spraying program with daconyl for blackspot and read daconyl's label; it's safe. As far as pruning; HF Young and CDB trailing the length of my 5' tall rose bush just fine I don't prune these two very drastically nature does the pruning (meaning I only prune back to where they wilt and die back). I hope that help.

Yes, that helps a lot. Being new to roses last year, I didn't realize I wasn't supposed to prune my climbers as much as I did the first year. But, they seem to be doing fine.

Yes, my Climber 'Cecile Brunner' blooms on last year growths. She's at her best this time of year. :-)
