What are Dwarf Iris?

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

I saw these for sale (shipped in the fall) at Dutch Gardens. It said Early Royal Dwarf Iris Mixture. Colors were blues and yellow and they looked really nice. As usual, I don't know anything about them so asking here. Thanks.

Here are some of pictures of my dwarf iris blooming this year for the first time. This one is iris danfordiae. They are very small -- maybe four inches high and should be planted in clumps. Very early in the spring and very welcome as far as I am concerned.

By very early, do you mean blooming with the crocus?

Somethimes with them & sometimes just afterwards--depends where they are planted.

mine came up with the crocus .

Do you think they would do well in the same locations around the garden that the crocus are planted in?

I am really going to be making a great effort to plant spring flowering bulbs this fall and one of my plans was to get lots more crocus for a hillside outside my home office window.

i think they would do fine any where . that would be cute . i dont have crocus because the squirrls wont leave them alone . they dont bother the iris.a mixed bed of i. reticulata and crocus would be cute

Wow, blooming in February. Nothing blooms this early here. The hillside is not the only place I am planning on adding crocus this fall but its a place were the dwarf iris would look great as I could see them without even going outside.

Since I started visiting the iris forum here everyday like I always do on the daylily forums, I have learned there are so many more types of iris that I did not even knew exhisted.

Here is iris reticulata "J.S.Dijt" in my garden. It bloomed just after some crocuses and just before others.

They look nicest in clumps -- very close together as you wll see in Plant Files:

By the way, I bought mine from Brent and Becky's and think they are first class.

Remember that Katharine Hodgkin is a little less hardy than some of the others, so is more expensive.

I will now, but I never knew before you mentioned it. I am not sure it gets cold enough here to matter.
