Echinacea tonic for cocker spaniels

Billingshurst, United Kingdom

Another year of Echinacea. I'll protect them from slugs as they push through the ground, but probably only so the dog can eat them later when in full leaf. I nearly bought him Echinacea tablets to get him through the winter. I love the flowers but I love the dog too. They're the only thing in the garden apart from Calamagrostis x acutiflora that he really likes to eat, so I guess I just needs to look at Echinaceas in other people's gardens. Anybody else have this problem?

i read in another thread about the 'little bed of horrors'. one takes a pack of 100 count wooden skewers and sticks them in the ground near the plants.

i also read about sticking or laying berry canes (the thorny kind) in the bed.

I have not tried either method but from what i read, they seem to work for the folks that posted them.
