Stained stainless steel sink

Dover AFB, DE(Zone 7a)

Some chemical or another that I used to try to clean a large pot has dripped onto the sides and top of the sink and stained it black. I've used vinegar, steel wool pad and cream tartar paste. Over the last couple of months I have gotten it to lighten a little to a dark grey. I think this was by grinding the ruined metal away with the SOS pad. There has got to be a way to remove the stains/restore the finish. Do you know of any?
