"Smoking" trees

Dandridge, TN(Zone 6a)

Last weekend it was unseasonably warm, sunny and mid 70s- our neighbor called us in the late morning to ask if we were burning something, he said they kept seeing occasional puffs of smoke.
As I was talking to him I walked out on our porch and saw what he was talking about- every time the breeze blew a little, there was a cloud of what looked like smoke coming our of our cedars. It was really bizarre!
My husband thought it must have been some sort of a pollen release.
Of course, by the time I grabbed the camera, it had pretty well stopped.

Anyone else ever notice this?

I should have googled it first before posting... sure 'nuff, that man is so smart. It was pollen. Here's an article that even has a little film.

I'm still glad you asked - and answered - the question. It's fascinating! Who knew!

Cedars pollinate in the autumn. Conifers pollinating around now include cypresses, junipers, yews, redwoods, so it is likely one of those. Later in the spring, pines, spruces, larches and firs.
