Sweet Potato Vine Tubers

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

I had some great bright green sweet potato vines last summer. When I got rid of the vine at the end of the summer I had huge potatoes. I decided to save them and see if I could plant them this year. Has any one had any success in growing sweet potatoe vine from the tubers. If so how did you do it?

although the roots may sometimes overwinter in the soil if kept on the dry side...

Ron,
Thanks for the info. I dug mine up last fall and stored them in my garage over the winter. Do I plant the whole tuber or do I cut pieces from it to plant?

Charlotte - I would suggest re-planting the entire tuber...

Thanks, will give it a try!

Nice to see this thread, I saved my bulbs last season too. I am hoping they come up soon, well when I plant them!

I just put them back in the ground or pot and they come back.

Each year before the frost hits, I dig up the tubers and bring
them into the greenhouse. They don't do much over winter, but
come spring, they are ready to roll. They were just moved again
a few days ago and have a great head start. These are the
ornamental type.

Then for regular, a fun little tidbit, too. I always buy extra sweet potatoes
at Thanksgiving. Leave them in a basket until they begin to sprout nubs,
then plant them half sticking out of a pot of soil and watch the fun. I gave
up the old fashioned toothpick and soaking in water nonsense years ago.
Much easier to stuff a 'tater in the dirt. The plants are looking fabulous!
