I have a pulmonaria under a maple tree where it doesn't get enough water during the summer. (since it's a raised bed under the tree, I don't have a soaker hose there - I water it by hand). I'd like to move the pulmonaria to a different shade bed where there's a soaker hose so he'll stay moist enough. My question is: should I dig him up now (he's just beginning to sprout some green) or should I wait until after he flowers.
Thanks in advance for helping a newbie!!
Can I move a pulmonaria now or should I wait?
Transplant it now!! Early spring is the best time to transplant, especially if you can catch them just as they're beginning to "sprout". As the soil warms up new roots are forming and the sooner the better to get it in its new spot so it will have time to adjust and then flower. Dig as large a clump of soil with it as you can to preserve the root system, transplant, water and wait for the blooms :)
rcn - Thanks! Tomorrow it's supposed to be 62 degrees here in Gettysburg, so I'll be out there moving the little guy!
Good luck :)
