Hey you do have the the kitties there..coool kitty! lol

Mount Pleasant Mills, PA(Zone 5a)

Just had time to take a look at this thread. LOVE the frogs. The ones in the wind chimes are a hoot!

Great squirrel shot Mrs. Ed. I love to watch the eat. Those grapes look yummy!

Gosh, we have a lot of those striped kitties where I live. In the Spring we refer to the area as "Skunk Hollow". The locals refer to them as black and white kitties with fluid drive.

I couldn't resist this cute ceramic peppermint feeder for only $6 at the farm store..the birds can't resist it either. The American Goldfinches are always first to try a new one out.

That is so cute Rose! Great pics!

Wow your Goldfinch are turning fast!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Thanks Pelle...they had some fruit shaped ones that were really cute but were $30!

I think some of our Goldfinches are arriving from the south and maybe that's why some are so brightly colored and some are just starting.
I can hardly wait to get pics of them when they have completely changed colors.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

a pair of Carolina Wrens at the feeder. They are building a nest in a gutter that extends under an overhanging roof. Which is fine as long as they finish raising their babies before the rainy season starts in June. Otherwise they might get awful wet.

Great pictures of your different birds.

Loved the peppermint bird feeder. Wish my feed store had pretty things like that. A couple of days ago I did see and here a Western Meadowlark, but not close enough for a picture. also the Phoebes are back, but it is so cold I doubt there are many bugs for them to catch. Mourning doves haven't arrived yet. My little flock of about 30 Goldfinches are slowly getting their new gold feathers. I am still putting out a couple of quarts of different feed for the birds. Not as many Calif. Quail this year as in past years. Have had as many as 200 coming in to eat, this year the most I saw was about 35.

This was a surprise visitor. I think this is a Goldfinch in its winter plumage.

Your feed store must be a really cool one Rose!!

G'Mornin all, My attempt to make a squirrel free feeder.
Let me first say that it is under this premise:
"I am cheap"
So finding material ( like the used 8' 4x4) is a treat for me.
and the branches -- had to trim and cut anyway
and the used wood stove single-wall outdoor chimney pipe which
I kept after pulling my wood stove out made me happy,
and the rebar from stuff I do made the whole project free.

For years -- I mean years and years I put up with squirrel
damaging anything that had food. Got to the point of just
throwing it on the ground ,didn't have to fill or clean (don't
look at my pic too closely- someday) and alot of the feed
had alot of hazelnuts from my sis in OR (free) till they moved,
so squirrels were half tolerated and entertaining. The problem- they ate too much,
hung around and didn't leave much for the ones I wished to
help out -- native little birds.

Then one day at Furney's Nursery in Des Moines, WA, chatting
with a very knowlegeable lady (green thumbs, toes and funny),
the topic changed to bird feeding and she told me about wood
stove pipe and how squirrels could not get a grip
on that size (6" diameter-single wall) and could not jump the 4' height.
. Her hubbie built a giant feeding table with 4 wood stove section legs-
I think she feeds an army. I just wanted one that the squirrels
wouldn't attack and claim victory.
After 3 years not one squirrel has conquered this thing-
still waiting for some flying squirrel or a combination of a bunch
of them getting together and hiking one up there. Now I'm pretty
confident that this is a squirrel free feeding station that is low
cost and sturdy.
Someday I'll paint it some other color and if a branch breaks,
get another and if I have to just rebore a bigger hole.
I just hang all the cheap feeders on there-- flickers hang off these
and get their share-- and use hanging basket chain with
red plates (draw hummers to area)-- it keeps the crows from getting in.
All the birds and squirrels that I try to not feed on the pole still gets enough
from all the piggy action most birds do so no one goes hungry.
The long rebar just tension against the oversize gap the pipe creates.

Last very important point- the feeder must be at least 10' from anything
the squirrels could climb on and do the kamikaze jump. I put my
used christmas tree out the first year for protection for the birdies and
the first day one jumped and grabbed the only not-cheap feeder and busted
the birdie landing. It was just a foot too close so I was able to move it till they couldn't jump-
amazing little acrobats running their hands over and over and contemplating for a long
time.
Hope this helps anyone contemplating putting a feed station up and wanting to keep
rockey from getting in. I know there is commercial products and didn't try plastic but
can say for the money, I love this thing. And hopefully ya'll could do one way better than mine.

dirt, what an amazing "squirrel-proof' feeder. Sure hope it keeps working for you. Loved the view of your garden. My youngest son and wife live just south of Auburn, by Hidden Lake. They are now Empty Nesters.. they feed squirrels on the railing of their deck. I don't thankfully have squirrels. They haven't found my place up in the Cascade foothills!!!!!

Thank you rutholive, I do hope this contraption keeps those critters away.
My pa used to feed squirrels to the point of those coming through the tool shop window
and getting peanuts out of his pockets. (looked for a pic-too many to find timely)
Cute smart little creatures but he taught em a very bad lesson.
He couldn't leave his window open or even the garage door which was adjucent. They would sneak in
and find the bags of nuts and go wild. Sometimes we would come over to play cards and hear this
rumaging going on and at times they wandered into the house. And persistant.
Glad you do not have to worry about them.
Very pretty country where you are. Got kin in Omak.

Wow Dirt! Finally a squirrel proof feeding station!

Nice pics bsharf!

dirt, Love your feeders!

Yonkers, NY(Zone 5b)

That will work until the squirrels hire a helicopter to air-lift them to the pole.
LOL!

gabagoo - hope they don't learn how to pole vault.
thank you pelle and juneybug -- don't say finally, maybe I have to goto plan B-

Coming to a feeder near you....
Pole vaults!
Catapaults!
Hang Gliders!
Bucket Trucks!

LOL!

This is the newest feeder and I really like it. The top is hinged for easy fill and cleaning and the "little" birds just love it. The larger birds can't perch on it and I am hoping the overhang will keep the feed dry. It is raining so I will know shortly!!

Here is the new Oriole feeder. Right now I have sunflower chips in the little cups and the Goldfinches are loving it. Of course when it looks like the Orioles will be arriving I will fill the cups with grape jelly and put the orange halves on the spikes! Colorful isn't it?!!

Cute ones Rose!

Well I'm having a lot of problems with squirrels so I had to move feeders to different places. Here is one of my Upside Down Nyjer feeders the squirrels have destroyed. Funny how they never liked nyjer for so long until now.

dellrose, great new feeders. I don't have many choices of feeders, mostly just Wal Mart, Occasionally see a few not very well made ones at a local home show.''
