Superb Lyrebird (Menura novaehollandiae)
Amazing bird to see in person.
Kennedy, my dream is to see one of these remarkable birds. What was your experience with it?
Margaret, we are lucky enough to have them as regular residents in this area, especially in Morwell National Park. I see them quite often and hear them singing and mimicking other birds frequently. Getting to see one displaying like this is rather special and I have only seen it once.
I was walking in Morwell NP and had walked along Fosters Gully to Lyndons Clearing when a lyrebird started singing loud and strong very nearby. I started walking slowly back along the track and was able to see the bird performing just a few feet off the track and got close enough to get this picture. It wasn't performing on its mound, but was simply perched on a low branch, but presumably had a display mound somewhere nearby. Just one of those special moments,
Kennedy
Lucky you. Thanks.
