Back & white, remove the same way?

I have had 5 whiteheads pop up on my face about 2 weeks ago. I don't really know what whiteheads are. Can they be removed like blackheads. I used to mash the blackheads out with the loop in a bobbie pin or most recently, with the loop in a paper clip. Any ideas would be appreciated.
