Thrift store brass fish

I found this at a local thrift store and I believe it is brass. It weighs at least 15 pounds if not more, I paid $7.99 for it. You can see how big it is because it covers a good area of our front door mat which ironically says "Gone Fishing".:>)


My question is will I be able to keep this outdoors in my garden? After I polish it is there anything that I can spray on it to keep it from tarnishing again?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!
