What a great photo! I had never heard of the Golden-fronted Woodpecker ... looks a lot like the Red-bellied: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Red-bellied_Woodpecker.html that is common in a lot of areas of the U.S.

I had to check out the Cornell site for the Golden-fronted: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Golden-fronted_Woodpecker.html#map I see this one is found in Oklahoma, Texas, Mexico, and the Yucatan. Check out the Cool Facts on that page! I got a chuckle out of the image of them having stained purple faces from eating the fruit of the Prickly Pear during the summer! I would love to see a photo of that!

I am really enjoying seeing pics of all these "new to me" birds being put in the Bird Files!!
Never heard of this one either.

Thanks guys! Yeah, I thought it was just a red bellied till I uploaded them and it didn't look quite right.... what a lucky find!

I saw the thing about purple faced ones on Cornell too - how cute! There were a lot of prickly pears loaded with purple fruit in the area, too bad I didn't see one on it.
